Having hangover from too much sweet stuff? I know how much sugar intake can make children and adults feeling so hyper. But there are kids who don' consume any of these sugary flavoured candies and chocolates are afflicted with these attention disorder or those that keep whirling around and non stop body movements almost like being automated. That you cannot let them sit properly on their seat for a minute or two. All these eventually lead to learning disability?
I think the main problem is not actually with the children but within the children's ability to learn in a "not" very pleasing atmosphere. The environment. The School! What's in the school? Let's have an example of a classroom with 40 middle school students. When I was in High School, each classroom has 50 students (25 girls + 25 boys). It was a Coed School, students have to wear uniform. Wearing identical uniform tend to help teachers and students rely on the "lesson" instead on about "fashion." The rooms are bigger in my School than other Schools here in Canada (That was in my time in High School) . Imagine having 50 wooden chairs with small desk attached to its arm plus the teacher's desk and her chair. I think our room was soundproof for I cannot hear the noise from the other rooms. When the teacher presided and wants to make his/her presence in the classroom she started with the roll call for attendance. Then the lesson begins. The lesson is most of the time the same from section one to section 10. That gives the teacher who from among the 500 students will end up at the top of the School. But sometimes the top 10 comes from section one. This is because the students at section one whose grades ranged from 85 to 99 %.
The basic arrangement of the class is "always" in alphabetical order unless "if" few students are nearsighted and they have to sit close to the board so that they can see what's being written or posted. Or if the student is a little deaf or hearing impaired. The seating arrangement is by 5's.
5 seating on the left and 5 seating on the right. There's a lane that divides the seating for the girls and the boys. This kind of seating arrangement make it easy for the students to move and for the teacher to inspect their paper work. The seating arrangement were arranged in order by the students who also clean the room after class. We don't have janitors, sad but true.
In my time, when the teacher is having her lesson at the front, all eyes on her. The teacher's voice should be loud enough for everyone to hear. The teacher is not allowed to just talk and the kids to listen to whatever she is saying. The teacher should at least provide visual aids or she can write on the blackboard and explain the topic for discussion. If she is not good in printing or writing on the board, she can ask the secretary of the class to do it for her (If they have a student body). Some teachers have poster inside the room or visual aids in the form of "slides" run by a new tech device. Some students wont have enough time to do all these things writing and listening at the same time when they are always in a hurry to get to another room for the next subject. This kind of formation is necessary in College not high school. Kids bouncing from one room to another caused too much noise and everyone's losing important time by changing rooms to get to another subject. That's why in my country they have the students in "block section." It is the duty of the teacher to go from one room to another saving precious time that is required for learning.
In High School students have a maximum 8 subjects: English, Pilipino, Social Studies, Economics, Science-Physics (Laboratory), PE or Physical Education(include Music and Arts), Math (Either Trigonometry, Geometry, or Algebra), Home Economics (Sewing, baking, painting, handicrafts, wine making, etc.) The laboratory and PE are in separate rooms. PE is most of the time outside for outdoor games and sports or at the gymnasium. One subject allowed for one hour only! There are extra curricular activities like being member of the School Dance Troupe, Cheering Squad, Singing (Choir Group, Volleybal Team, Basketball Team, Martial Arts Team. Teams who performed for intramurals. Extra curricular activities help boost the students' grade. CAT or Citizen Army Training is required in Fourth Year ( It's a military training, march, camping, first aid and other fitness endeavour)
I've never seen any student suffered from learning disability in my class or within the school area. I haven't heard of the word "Autism or Asperger Syndrome, Dyslexia, until I came here in Canada. I never encountered such "term!" That I want to know why there are millions of children afflicted with that kind of learning disability. Do we have to blame the parents or the teachers? Do we have to blame the School Board or the NEW TECHNOLOGY that not only the young ones but also the adults are being corrupted by this new high tech gadgets.
